Good afternoon:
I’m pleased to share with you some of the focus for our Ministry’s 2025/26 Budget.
The Ministry of Education's goal this fiscal year is to allocate funding for school improvements which include education reform and student achievement. More details on the execution of such will be provided during the Committee of Supply in the House of Assembly.
As the Premier and Minister of Finance stated during his recent Budget Statement, the Ministry of Education has been allocated $149.2 million, an increase of $9.8 million (7%). This funding will support programs and necessary resources to deliver quality and safe learning experiences.
To assist Bermudians who have the goal of obtaining a tertiary education, the Ministry’s Scholarships and Awards have increased by $222,525, bringing the total to $1.8 million for post-secondary education, providing more opportunities for young adults to access funding and pursue their dreams.
To address educators' concerns, we will increase substitute teachers by 26% to support education reform and assist school leaders with day-to-day operations. Additionally, funding will enhance student support services for academic accommodations, wrap-around services, gifted and talented programs, social/emotional programs, and career counselling, ensuring each student has the resources needed to succeed.
Capital funding has increased by 52% to support the infrastructure projects for Harrington Sound & Elliot Parish Primary Schools, set to open in September 2025. Renovation and rebuilding of school infrastructure aims to create safe, innovative learning environments with a focus on accessibility and energy efficiency, aligning with ongoing education reform efforts.
This funding will also support the transformation of Prospect Primary to a school for “Exceptionalities”, and continued enhancements for Signature Schools at the Berkeley Institute, Cedarbridge Academy, and Sandys Secondary Middle School. Besides capital works, these additional funds will be used to improve technological infrastructure within schools, including updating business studies computer labs, faster internet access, and incorporating more digital learning platforms into the curriculum.
From our Throne Speech initiatives to our Budget this is a reflection of our powerful belief: that Bermuda works best when it works for all of us.
Bermuda, together we will continue striving to build a community that is more equitable, affordable, and prosperous for all.
Thank you.
