“October has been a month of reflection, remembrance, and resilience in Bermuda, as we've collectively recognised Domestic Violence Awareness Month," said the Minister of Social Development and Seniors, the Hon. Tinee Furbert, JP, MP.
“Earlier this year, we proudly implemented the Multi-Agency Risk Assessment Conference (MARAC) Model in Bermuda. By bringing together key agencies and professionals to better support survivors and hold perpetrators accountable, this was a critical step in our ongoing efforts to enhance our response to domestic violence.”
Minister Furbert added, "I am happy to share that throughout this month, numerous workshops have taken place to support our work in creating a safer and more supportive environment for victims. These workshops have been attended by representatives from various government departments and organisations, including staff from the Ministry of Social Development and Seniors, Department of Child and Family Services (DCFS), Courts (including Magistrates and Family Panel),The Mirrors Programme, and the Coalition for the Protection of Children. Their active participation reflects their dedication to strengthening our community's response to domestic violence.”
“On behalf of the government, I would like to express my sincere gratitude to the Centre Against Abuse, the Bermuda Police Service, the Women’s Resource Center, Inspire Bermuda, the One Love Foundation. and all domestic violence organisations for their invaluable involvement and unwavering support. These organisations play a pivotal role in raising awareness, providing vital resources, and assisting survivors on their path to healing and justice.”
“I also want to highlight that this month, we got to experience "Purple Thursday," which saw victims standing in solidarity to raise awareness and be change agents. Tammy Richardson of the One Love Foundation facilitated this powerful event.”
Minister Furbert concluded, "It is with deep appreciation that I acknowledge the collective efforts of our community to raise awareness of domestic violence. By implementing the MARAC Model and hosting these events and training workshops, we are working towards a safer Bermuda where no one should suffer in silence. Together, we can create a more compassionate and supportive environment for those affected by domestic violence."
