"Bermuda must be ready for PIPA 2025," said the Minister of the Cabinet Office, the Hon. Vance Campbell, who is leading a delegation to the UK for a series of meetings discussing Personal Information and Privacy Protection.
On Monday, Minister Campbell met with Vashti Maharaj, Adviser, Digital Trade Policy and Senior Director, Suresh Yadav, at the Commonwealth Secretariat to discuss policy and enforcement of data protection and Bermuda’s preparedness for the implementation of PIPA (Personal Information and Protection Act) which is expected to come into effect January 1, 2025.
Minister Campbell added, "Meeting with representatives of the UK Government's Department for Science, Innovation and Technology (DSIT) team facilitated critical discussions on the process for assessments to gain PIPA certifications, the existence of data bridges and the benefits of this concept.
"Global Regulatory Strategies using Artificial Intelligence and the Principles to be considered when developing future legislative frameworks were highlighted by Eduardo Ustaran, Partner at Hogan Lowell’s, Privacy and Security practice. We also took the opportunity to delve into the details of the Strategy for the EU and UK Adequacy. This is information that could assist Bermuda in building partnerships with some of the leaders in privacy."
The Minister is accompanied by a team of technical officers who will have direct responsibilities under the PIPA legislation, including the Permanent Secretary Pandora Glasford, Commissioner Alex White, Deputy Commissioner Angie Farquharson, Dr. Marisa Stones, Dr. Nicola O'Leary, and Kennette Naylor.
These meetings have been timed to coincide with the IAPP (International Association of Privacy Professionals) Data Protection Intensive: UK 2024 Conference. This event features a series of workshops on privacy, data protection and artificial intelligence. On the opening day of this event Minister Campbell met with the keynote speaker, John Edwards, Information Commissioner of the UK Information Commissioner’s Office.
Minister Campbell concluded, “This is an important visit as we set the stage for PIPA's local adoption. It is useful to have the support of the UK ICO in arranging such an important discussion with Mr. Edwards and connecting professionals of international repute with our own technical team is invaluable to the smooth implementation of this pending legislation."
