Before I start, the Bermuda Road Safety Council (BRSC) extends condolences to the family of Mr. Jordan Outerbridge. Our thoughts and prayers are with you during this difficult time.
As we reflect on 2020 as being a difficult year for everyone, the BRSC reminds the motoring public that we will continue with our mandate of promoting and educating the public regarding better driving habits and skills to keep our roads safer for everyone.
With these goals in mind, we will introduce our monthly Road Safety focus for April 2021 - which is Obey Traffic/Road Signs. The BRSC chose this topic because we believe all the motoring public should know the importance of these signs, their meanings and why signs are placed around the island.
The purpose of traffic/road signs is to provide guidance, information and warnings to all road users. Therefore, the BRSC reminds the motoring public to always observe and obey every traffic/road sign. As we are all aware, Bermuda has many traffic signs. If you are not familiar with any of these signs, please obtain a Traffic Code Handbook from the Transport Control Department or borrow one from a family member or friend. Whether it is the speed limit, stop, concealed entrance, or give way sign – all road signs are erected for our safety. By adhering to road signs, we all make an important contribution to making our roads safer.
I will also use this time to thank the 2020- 2021 Bermuda Road Safety Council members for their service and contributions. As April is the beginning of the new year for the BRSC, I would like to officially introduce the BRSC council members for 2021-2022: Wayne Swan (Deputy Chairman), Dante Cooper, Shantia Tankard (Community Outreach Chairman), Marcus George, Roxanne Christopher (Marketing Chairman), Alexa Lightbourne (Public Relations Chairman) and our newest member, Zakkiyah Daniels. The BRSC looks forward to this year with excitement and expectation as we have many new road safety initiatives planned. We will continue to do our best to keep the public informed of our activities.
In January 2021 the BRSC re-introduced the Junior Road Safety Council (JRSC), which consists of 5 students from public and private schools who have taken on the challenge of being the face of road safety for their peers. In May 2021 we will officially introduce the JRSC members via our social media.
In December 2020 the BRSC started their rebranding process and on April 1st 2021, our new logo was introduced (see attached). The BRSC is also in the process of developing its website and after that work is completed, we will hold another press conference to introduce both our rebranding and website to the public.
In closing, the BRSC reminds motorists that driving and riding on our roads is a privilege and with that comes a lot of responsibility and accountability. We ask all motorists to reduce your speed, drive and ride with care, caution and courtesy, and most importantly, Don’t Drink and Drive. If we all do our part, we can make our roads safer for everyone.
