Appointment of Independent Senators

His Excellency the Governor, acting in his discretion in accordance with Section 27 of the Bermuda Constitution, has made the following appointments to the Senate:                                                                                              

Mrs Joan Dillas-Wright MBE, JP

Mr James Jardine JP

Mrs Michelle Simmons

The Governor said “I am grateful to each of the Independent Senators for their willingness to serve.  Mrs Carol Bassett, who has served as President of the Senate since 2008, is retiring after 14 years of devoted and selfless service to the Bermuda Parliament. On behalf of my predecessors as Governor and myself, I am grateful for all of her commitment to the work of the Senate throughout her period of office.”

Notes:

Joan Dillas-Wright MBE, JP was first appointed as an Independent Senator in 2008.

James Jardine JP was first appointed as an Independent Senator in 2011. 

Michelle Simmons is the former Principal of The Berkeley Institute, where she held that position for 20 years.  Prior to that she was involved in education in the UK and in Nigeria and also worked for a period of time at The Bermuda High School for Girls when she first returned to Bermuda.  

Mrs Simmons was involved in transitioning The Berkeley Institute to the GCSE curriculum and was involved in the accreditation process with Middle State Schools and Colleges.
