The Government of Bermuda’s Ageing and Disability Services (ADS) hosted its 3rd Annual Senior’s Tea on Friday, 6 June at the Willowbank Resort Hotel, bringing together seniors from across the island for a heartwarming afternoon of connection, reflection, and education. Held in recognition of World Elder Abuse Awareness Day (15 June), the event highlighted the importance of preventing senior abuse, an often under-recognized issue. Social isolation is a key risk factor, and creating opportunities for seniors to connect with each other and with community resources is one of the ways ADS works to address this risk.
“The Seniors Tea is more than just a social event, it’s a meaningful opportunity to foster community connections, share valuable information, and encourage ongoing engagement,” said a spokesperson for ADS. “We want our seniors to know that staying connected is a key part of staying safe and empowered.”
This year’s theme, “Estate Planning: Empowering Our Future,” offered guests a valuable opportunity to gain knowledge from experts on critical topics such as wills, powers of attorney, and healthcare directives. Mr. Perry Trott of Trott and Duncan delivered an engaging and practical session, sharing local examples that highlighted the importance of preparation to safeguard one’s future and avoid unnecessary challenges.
Minister of Youth, Social Development and Seniors, the Hon. Tinee Furbert, JP, MP, addressed attendees with a message of empowerment and appreciation. “Estate planning may not always be the easiest subject to discuss, but it is one of the most caring and considerate gifts we can offer our families,” Minister Furbert said. “It’s about more than just finances, it’s about clarity, dignity, and ensuring that the values we cherish continue to guide future generations.” She added, “In community we find strength, in knowledge we find empowerment.”
The Minister also praised the ADS team for their dedication and coordination and encouraged seniors to take full advantage of the resources made available at the event. Informational tables were hosted by Age Concern, the Department of Social Insurance, Department of Financial Assistance, and Dementia Bermuda. Guests were also treated to performances by the Northlands Primary School choir and musical guest Keith Lee. MC Nikita Robinson kept the programme flowing, while hospitality was graciously provided by Willowbank. Special thanks were extended to the Bermuda Police Service, Cookies by Cross, the K Margaret Carter Centre, and Live Net Bermuda for their generous volunteer contributions and support.
The afternoon fostered warmth and camaraderie, with many seniors sharing personal stories and connecting with one another in meaningful ways. The event remains a celebration of the strength, wisdom, and contributions of Bermuda’s senior community. Attendance was higher than ever, and while demand exceeded capacity, efforts were made to expand the event this year and will continue in future years. Seniors are encouraged to listen out in mid-May for next year’s registration announcements.
