On behalf of the Ministry of Youth, Social Development and Seniors, welcome to Seniors Expo 2026. I am pleased to see our seniors here, along with the caregivers, families and organisations whose work supports older adults across Bermuda.

Today, on the United Nations International Day of Older Persons, we recognise Bermuda's seniors and the contributions you continue to make to our island.

You help raise grandchildren, serve in community organisations, share your knowledge and support the people around you. Your experience belongs in the decisions that affect your lives. Many of you shaped Bermuda's first National Seniors Strategy through the town halls, surveys and forums that built it.

This year's theme is "The Age of Longevity: Rethinking Systems for Longer Lives."

Bermuda's population is ageing. People are living longer, and that is worth celebrating. It also asks more of our systems: care at home, housing, health services and protection from financial harm all need to keep pace.

For seniors and their families, that has practical meaning. Can you get the support you need at home? Do you know where to turn if someone you love begins showing signs of dementia? Can you recognise a financial scam and get help if you have been targeted?

The National Seniors Strategy is now in action. Our Dementia Care Services Programme brings assessments, care planning and in-home support to families across Bermuda.

Today's Expo brings the people who can answer those questions together in one place. Throughout the day, you can speak directly with government departments, healthcare professionals, community organisations and service providers. The programme covers healthy ageing, dementia care, financial crime prevention and consumer protection, housing resources and community support.

Please ask about your own circumstances. If you are unsure about a service or how to apply, ask someone to explain it. Before leaving a booth, make sure you know the next step and who to contact.

To our caregivers and family members, thank you. We recognise the time you spend arranging appointments, helping with daily routines and coordinating care, often alongside work and other family responsibilities. Please seek information for yourselves today. Your wellbeing matters, and you deserve support as well.

Until 17 October, the Ministry and Solstice are offering free counselling and support groups for caregivers. Ask about it today.

I also thank the Ministry team who organised this Expo, along with our exhibitors, presenters, vendors and community partners. Your expertise helps families make informed decisions about their care.

Many of us are here because a senior guided us, raised us or cared for us. Today is a chance to return that care.

To our seniors, enjoy the conversations and activities, reconnect with familiar faces and take something useful home.

Ask your questions. Take your next step. Leave knowing who to call.

Thank you, and have a wonderful Seniors Expo 2026.
