The Ministry of Education is pleased to announce the appointment of the newly constituted Board of Education, which will continue to play a vital role in supporting governance, policy development, and advocacy for Bermuda's public education system during this important period of reform. Constituted in July 2026 under the Education Act 1996, the Board is chaired by Dr. Dawnnelle Walker and comprises experienced leaders from education, business, public service, and community sectors. Together, they bring the expertise needed to support student success and strengthen public education in Bermuda.
Board members include Dr. Dawnnelle Walker (Chair), Ms. Lisa DeSilva (Deputy Chair), Ms. Tammy Robinson, Ms. Denise Simons, Mr. Kenton Trott, Mrs. Enid Furbert-Jacobs, Ms. Lloyquita Symonds, Sen. Lindsay Simmons JP, Mr. Lamar Caines, Dr. P. Craig Nikolai, Ms. Kiesha Douglas, Ms. Angelika Marshall, and Mr. Anthony Wolffe. The Permanent Secretary for Education, Commissioner of Education, and a Bermuda College representative serve as ex officio members. [
Honouring Commissioner Kalmar Richards
The Ministry extends its sincere appreciation to Mrs. Kalmar Richards upon her retirement following a distinguished 40-year career in public education. As teacher, principal, and Commissioner of Education, she provided exceptional leadership, including guiding Bermuda's public schools through the COVID-19 pandemic and helping advance the Island's education reform agenda. Her contributions have left a lasting legacy for Bermuda's students, educators, and families.
Acting Commissioner Appointed
Following Mrs. Richards' retirement, Dr. Radell Tankard has been appointed Acting Commissioner of Education. A veteran educator with 37 years of experience, Dr. Tankard has served the Department of Education since 2005 in several senior leadership roles, including Acting Permanent Secretary and Assistant Director for Senior Schools. His extensive experience and steady leadership will help ensure continuity during the transition period while recruitment for a permanent Commissioner is underway.
Advancing Education Reform
These leadership developments come as Bermuda prepares to introduce the proposed Education Authority Bill, which will establish an independent statutory authority to oversee public education. The legislation represents a significant milestone in the Government's education reform agenda and reflects years of research, consultation, and planning led by the Education Authority Working Group under the leadership of Mr. Phillip Butterfield.
Preparing for the New School Year
The Ministry also assures parents, students, and staff that preparations for the September school opening are progressing well. The Department of Education continues to work closely with Facilities and the Ministry of Public Works to ensure schools are safe, well-maintained, and ready to welcome students and staff.
