The Office of Youth Affairs hosted a special International Youth Day Luncheon, bringing together young Bermudian leaders for an afternoon of meaningful conversation, connection and celebration.
Hosted by the Hon. Tinée Furbert, JP, MP, Minister of Youth, Social Development and Seniors, the luncheon welcomed young leaders ranging from 16 to 35 years old, representing a variety of backgrounds, experiences and areas of leadership across Bermuda.
The event was held in recognition of International Youth Day, a global observance established by the United Nations to celebrate the contributions of young people and highlight the issues, opportunities and aspirations that shape their lives.
This year's luncheon centred around the theme "Different Contexts, Common Aspirations," recognizing that while young Bermudians may come from different backgrounds, communities and lived experiences, they share many of the same hopes for opportunity, progress and a brighter future.
Rather than a traditional presentation, the luncheon created an open and engaging environment where young leaders could speak candidly with Minister Furbert and one another about the current state of affairs for young people in Bermuda.
The open-floor discussion explored the challenges facing young Bermudians, the opportunities available to them and what must be done collectively to create a stronger future. Participants challenged ideas, exchanged perspectives and reflected on the importance of ensuring that young people have meaningful opportunities to contribute to conversations that affect their lives.
Participants expressed appreciation for the opportunity to engage directly with the Minister and their peers, noting that they would welcome more opportunities for formal dialogue, networking and intergenerational conversations of this nature. The luncheon also served as a celebration of youth leadership and camaraderie, bringing young people together around one table to build relationships, exchange ideas and recognize their shared commitment to Bermuda's future.
