Her Majesty The Queen has recognised the following people in her annual Birthday Honours Iist:
OBE:
• The Hon. K. H. Randolph Horton JP – for his services to sport and public service in Bermuda.
Queen’s Certificate and Badge of Honour:
• Mrs Ercinda Swan – for services to seniors and the physically challenged
• Mrs Cecille Snaith-Simmons – for services to culture
The Hon. K. H. Randolph Horton JP - “Randy” Horton is a Bermudian sporting institution having excelled representing Bermuda internationally in both cricket and football. He played for the Somerset Trojans football club prior to his international career and went on to play professional football with the New York Cosmos in the North American Soccer League [NASL] from 1971 – 1975. While there he was awarded Rookie of the Year [1971] and Most Valuable Player (1972). In 1972, the same year Mr. Horton was the top scorer in the NASL, he was brought back to the island for the 1972 FA final where he scored a hat trick in a 4-1 Somerset victory over PHC. He finished off his NASL career playing for the Hartford Bicentennials.
Sporting Awards Include:
- 1971 Rookie of the Year for the New York Cosmos
- 1972 Most Valuable Player in North American Soccer League
- 2001 Nominated for the United States Soccer Hall of Fame
- 2004 Inducted into Bermuda’s Sports Hall of Fame
Mr. Horton captained Somerset in Cup Match for six years, including the memorable 1979 victory which broke St. George’s 20-year winning streak.
Away from the field of play Mr. Horton is a retired educator having received a Teacher’s Certificate in Math and Physical Education from Culham College in Oxfordshire, England, and a Bachelor’s Degree in Economics from Rutgers University. In 1974, Mr. Horton earned a Master’s Degree in Educational Administration and Supervision from Rutgers. He taught both elementary and high school in Bermuda and at College level in the US, and served ten years as Principal of Warwick Secondary School.
Mr. Horton served in the House of Assembly from 1998 – 2012 and served in the Cabinet as Minister without Portfolio, Minister of Community Affairs and Sport, Minister of Labour, Home Affairs and Public Safety and Minister of Education. Following the 2012 General Election he was elected Speaker of the House of Assembly and ended his parliamentary career in 2017.
Mrs Ercinda Swan – Twenty-four (24) years ago Cindy Swan and the late Judith Stewart founded Project Action to provide free transportation for Seniors and the physically challenged.
Mrs Swan has organised numerous fundraising drives and raised millions of dollars through corporate and individual donations to ensure this vital community service has been provided.
Mrs Cecille Snaith-Simmons – Mrs Snaith-Simmons has committed herself to the telling of stories of unsung heroes and community figures in Bermudian history. Through her regular research and columns in local media, she has added to the preservation and expansion of Bermuda’s written and oral history. Her insight and carefully articulated accounts of community figures has enhanced Bermuda’s cultural awareness.
