Her Majesty The Queen has recognised the following people in her annual Birthday Honours Iist:
Queen’s Certificate and Badge of Honour awardees:
Mr. Allan Trew - for services to tourism;
Ms. Laurie Shiell - for services to the community;
Dr. Clarence Maxwell - for services to culture and Bermuda history; and
Mr. Jon Beard – for services to sport
• Mr. Allan Trew (for services to tourism) - Mr. Trewretired in 2017 after 38 years in the tourism industry having started in 1970 as an assistant front desk manager and ending as Hotel Manager at the flagship Farimont Hamilton Princess. He is recognized as a consummate tourism professional who has, through his diligence, risen to the top of the industry in Bermuda serving as a mentor to young people entering tourism.
• Ms. Laurie Shiell (for services to the community) - Ms. Shiell has served as the Executive Director of the Centre Against Abuse for 12 years and is a strong advocate for the elimination of abuse against women. She has been named a global role model of those working to end attacks against women. During the course of the pandemic she has met the needs of the community following the unfortunate increase in domestic violence issues securing domestic violence protection orders in support of those seeking to extricate themselves from abusive relationships.
• Mr. Jon Beard (for services to sport) – Having qualified as a teacher in the UK, Mr. Beard has been teaching for 40 years in Bermuda. He has cultivated generations of young men and women in sport and has served in a variety of sports administrative roles. During his time in Bermuda, Mr. Beard has been actively involved in many community organisations. He has served as a trustee at the National Sports Centre, Chairman of YouthNet, Chairman of the Bermuda Island Games Association, a member of the Bermuda Olympic Association; and has been: a member of the Bermuda Football Association Executive, Coach of the Bermuda Football Association in Youth Teams, President of the Bermuda Athletic Association, Chairman of Bermuda Council for Drug Free Sport [became Bermuda Sport Anti-Doping Authority] and Chairman of the Bermuda Schools Sports Federation.
• Dr. Clarence Maxwell (for services to culture and Bermuda History) – Dr. Maxwell is among the foremost academic authorities on the African Diaspora and the Atlantic world history. He formerly worked for the Bermuda Maritime Museum as Registrar and Director of Historical Research and is now an assistant professor of history at Millersville University in Lancaster, Pennsylvania. His publications include the insightful works “Race and Servitude: the birth of a social and political order in Bermuda, 1616-1669” and “Enslaved Merchants, Enslaved Merchant Mariners and the Bermuda Conspiracy of 1791”.
