Department of Education Announces Acting Principal Appointments

Commissioner of Education, Mrs. Kalmar Richards announced on Monday, July 13th, 2020 a number of Acting Principal appointments in Bermuda’s public schools.

The appointments were made necessary by retirements and a resignation and are effective at the start of the new school year.

The appointments are:

  • Enid Furbert-Jacobs – Acting Principal Purvis Primary
  • Jana Pitcher – Acting Principal, Gilbert Institute
  • Linda Holdipp– Acting Principal, Northlands Primary
  • Sonia Haley – Acting Principal, Paget Primary

Continuing as Acting Principals for the upcoming school year are Mrs. Kalley Baxter-Williams, Mrs Lisa Swan and Mr Kenneth Caesar at Sandys Secondary Middle School, Clearwater Middle School and CedarBridge Academy respectively.

The recruitment process for substantive postholders is ongoing. That process requires a number of steps that would not have enabled the Department to have substantive postholders confirmed and in place for September 2020.  However, the Department put a process in place to select Acting Principals who could be appointed by July 2020 and who would have the summer months to plan, prepare and transition into their new schools on September 1st, 2020. This process also enabled the Department to give school staff and parents advance notice of the appointment and an opportunity to connect with the Acting Principals prior to the start of the new school year.

Commissioner Richards said: “We are grateful to these educators for stepping up to the plate for our students and families in our schools. Together they bring decades of experience as educators and I am confident that they will make a valuable collective contribution to improving student achievement.”
