Bermuda icons recognized
As part of the Island’s black history awareness the Minister of Labour, Community Affairs and Sports, the Hon. Lovitta Foggo recently joined Northlands Primary students in celebrating those who have made great contributions to Bermuda.
The students were given history lessons about sports legend Calvin ‘Bummy’ Symonds, who was recently honoured by the school with the renaming of its Courtyard in his name.
The youngsters also learned about Mary Prince by receiving a reading from ‘Who is Mary Prince?’. This awareness effort coincides with Minister Foggo’s recent announcement of the renaming of Somers Day to Mary Prince Day.
Minister Foggo also formally cut the ribbon to the Calvin “Bummy” Symonds Courtyard during the occasion.
Of late, the Ministry has sought to heighten community awareness about individuals who have made significant contributions to Bermuda by renaming notable buildings and dates.
Examples include the renaming the Centre on Angle Street and gym to the Sammy Wilson Central Zone Community Centre and Clarence Hill Multi-purpose Gymnasium. The renaming of Somers Day to Mary Prince Day. And the renaming of Northlands’ Courtyard to the Calvin ‘Bummy’ Symonds Courtyard.
Minister Foggo notes that these “symbolic gestures afford all of Bermuda to learn more about our shared history.”
