Minister congratulates Bermuda National Football Team on Historic Win

“An outstanding and historic performance by our Gombey Warriors,” said the Hon. Lovitta Foggo, Minister of Labour, Community Affairs and Sports, following the Bermuda National Football team’s 2-0 victory over Nicaragua last night (June 24).

And the Sports Minister confirmed that the Ministry in conjunction with the Department of Youth, Sports and Recreation is planning a celebratory motorcade in the coming days to honour the winning team. The Ministry will share details on the motorcade’s date and time in due course.

Last night, Minister Foggo was present to cheer the team on along with dozens of Bermudians at the Red Bull Arena in New Jersey.

Minister Foggo said she was “absolutely blown away” by the team’s performance and commended the players, Bermuda Football Association (BFA) president Mark Wade, National Team Coach Kyle Lightbourne and General Secretary, David Sabir for Bermuda’s hard fought win.

Minister Foggo said, “Our Gombey Warriors demonstrated their skill and talent for the world to see and it was an amazing sight to watch. The atmosphere and energy in the arena was exciting and their win was something I believed they had the capacity to do – and they absolutely delivered. We celebrated Bermudian Excellence last night and this is proof positive that Bermuda continues to punch above its weight on the global stage. We are so proud of our national team’s achievement and look forward to continuing to support them in their upcoming matches. In the coming days, we will be celebrating our team’s victory with a motorcade and we encourage all of Bermuda to come out along the route to cheer on our championship team."
