On KBB Artful Bins Presentation

Good afternoon,

Thank you for being here today as we partner with the KBB Artful Bins Project in an effort to keep our island home looking beautiful and pristine.

The KBB Artful Bins Project is a creative and fun approach to encouraging the correct disposal of trash, which started in 2010 as a lesson in re-use. 

Many of the bins are donated by Derek Wooley from ROCON Services. These bins arrive in Bermuda full of supplies for the water plant and, once they are empty, the top is cut off and drain holes drilled in the bottom so that they can be re-used as waste bins. 

The popularity of these bins has grown over the years and you may see them at schools, public parks, playgrounds and sports fields. 

Deciding what to put on the bins is entirely up to the artist, whether it be an environmental message or scenes of Bermuda.

The Warwick Academy students involved with this particular project - Anthony Whaley, Cameron Lee-Ming and Connor Strohecker - have done a remarkable job in depicting scenes, history and environmental messages on three bins which promote The Sandys Parish Council, The Somerset Bridge “Eagles”, and Community spirit. 

The attention to detail certainly shows us that these students have spent many hours researching the subjects, planning the designs and painting the bins.

I am thrilled that White Hill Field - one of the best fields for playing soccer and cricket on the Island - has been chosen as the most recent location for these bins.

As you may recall, we pledged in our throne speech this year to build a facility at White Hill Field for use by the West End community and the general public. Our hope is that more people will consequently use this venue for community sports. However, with more people, typically comes more trash...so these bins will be a big help in encouraging field users to properly dispose of their trash...and they look great!

In closing, I would like to thank Keep Bermuda Beautiful (KBB) - one of the oldest environmental charities in Bermuda - for facilitating this project and encouraging our people to take an active role in keeping Bermuda beautiful and litter-free.
