Minister Weeks Visits Royal Bermuda Regiment Personnel in Jamaica During Recovery Mission

The Minister of National Security, the Hon. Michael A. Weeks, JP, MP, travelled to Jamaica this week to visit members of the Royal Bermuda Regiment who are currently deployed on a disaster recovery mission following the impact of Hurricane Melissa.

The Minister, who was accompanied by Bermuda’s National Disaster Coordinator, Mr Noel Martin, met with the soldiers in the parish of St. Elizabeth, where they are working alongside regional and international partners on a coordinated reconstruction initiative aimed at refurbishing homes and improving long-term hurricane resilience.

The visit formed part of the Minister’s commitment to observe the recovery efforts firsthand and personally thank the troops for their service, as well as personally demonstrate support for Jamaica from the Government of Bermuda.

The operation brings together the Jamaica Defence Force (JDF), the Guyana Defence Force (GDF), and the Ghana Armed Forces (GAF).

The mission also includes a British Overseas Territories contingent comprised of the Royal Bermuda Regiment, along with representatives from the Turks and Caicos Islands and the Cayman Islands.

Works currently underway include reinforcing roof systems through the installation of hurricane straps, replacing deteriorated beams, elevating ceilings where required, and carrying out other targeted structural upgrades designed to improve structural integrity and wind resistance.

The initiative reflects a deliberate “build back stronger” approach to ensure that homes are more secure and stable ahead of future hurricane seasons.

Minister Weeks stated: “I wanted to travel to Jamaica to see firsthand the work our soldiers are carrying out and to thank them personally for representing Bermuda with professionalism and decorum. Each of them volunteered for this mission, and they continue to demonstrate the highest standards of service.”

He added: “This deployment goes beyond immediate repairs. It is important that we support families as they rebuild in a way that solidifies and protects their homes against future storms.

“Our Regiment is contributing to a coordinated effort that promotes long-term resilience through this important work with regional partners.”

The Minister also acknowledged the strong multinational cooperation evident throughout the mission, noting that the collaboration between defence forces has created a disciplined and supportive working environment that integrates skills development with meaningful recovery work.
