Updates to the National Electricity Sector Policy
The Minister of Home Affairs, the Hon. Alexa Lightbourne recently announced a comprehensive update to the National Electricity Sector Policy, marking the first major revision since 2015.
The updated policy sets a clear vision for a reliable, affordable, and low-carbon energy future, aligned with global best practices and Bermuda’s sustainability goals.
The new framework focuses on:
- Affordability and Security: Protecting residents and businesses from volatile fuel costs while ensuring predictable rates.
- Clean Energy Transition: Expanding renewable energy, battery storage, and distributed generation to reduce reliance on imported fuels.
- Workforce Development: Training Bermudians for emerging roles in solar installation, energy auditing, and grid modernization.
- Grid Modernization: Upgrading infrastructure to support smart metering, electric vehicles, and improved system resilience.
The policy also introduces measures to promote community solar projects, equitable access to clean energy, and the creation of a Green Fund to finance sustainable initiatives.
During her Statement, Minister Lightbourne said, “This policy is a blueprint for Bermuda’s energy future, one that prioritizes affordability, resilience, and sustainability for generations to come.”
The full policy will be finalized and released for public consultation by the end of 2025.
