Ministry Marks International Day of Older Persons 2025

Youth Social Development Seniors

The Ministry of Youth, Social Development and Seniors joins the global community in marking October 1, International Day of Older Persons 2025 under the theme, “Older Persons Driving Local and Global Action: Our Aspirations, Our Well-Being and Our Rights”.

This year’s theme is a powerful reminder that older persons are not passive bystanders in our communities, but active contributors whose wisdom and lived experiences continue to shape our present and our future. We must change the narrative and dismantle the stigmas that portray ageing solely as decline. Instead, we must affirm ageing as a stage of strength, dignity and continued contribution.

Ageism, whether in the form of stereotypes, discrimination or exclusion, remains a barrier to the full participation of older persons in society. The Ministry is committed to tackling ageism in all its forms, ensuring that policies, programmes and services reflect the rights, dignity and value of every individual, regardless of age.

We recognise that fostering intergenerational understanding is essential to building stronger communities. When younger and older persons are brought together, both groups benefit from the exchange of knowledge, mentorship and innovation. The Ministry continues to promote intergenerational initiatives that celebrate shared experiences, bridge divides and strengthen social cohesion.

In addressing age discrimination, we reaffirm our responsibility to protect the rights of older persons in employment, healthcare, social participation and community life. Discrimination based on age has no place in a fair and inclusive Bermuda.

Over the past year, the Ministry has advanced several initiatives to support older persons. These include expanding community programmes that reduce isolation and promote healthy ageing, enhancing access to social support services and strengthening partnerships with voluntary and community organisations. We have also introduced public education campaigns to raise awareness about ageism and highlight the positive contributions of older persons, while developing policies that ensure older persons can age with security, dignity and respect.

As we look ahead, the Ministry remains committed to listening to the voices of older persons, advancing their rights and supporting their aspirations. Together, let us build a society that values every stage of life, where older persons can thrive and continue to drive local and global action.

Honouring the past, empowering the present and shaping the future, our older persons are, and always will be, at the heart of Bermuda’s progress.
