Bermuda Archives and National Trust Celebrate International Archives Day Showcasing Bermuda's Rich Visual Heritage

In special partnership with the Bermuda National Trust, the Bermuda Archives proudly celebrated International Archives Day on June 9 with a unique joint exhibition entitled 'Legacy in Paint and Paper', showcasing Bermuda's rich visual heritage.
Held at the Bermuda Archives, the exhibition offered the public a rare opportunity to explore the detailed visual records of early illustrators Edward James and Thomas Driver, two pivotal artists whose works document nearly a century of Bermudian life.
International Archives Day, observed globally on June 9, commemorates the founding of the International Council on Archives in 1948. It serves as an important reminder of archives' essential role in preserving collective memory, promoting accountability, and deepening our understanding of the past. This year’s celebration in Bermuda underscored the power of collaboration in bringing history to life.
The exhibition featured a carefully curated selection of artworks by Edward James, who lived in Bermuda from 1861 to 1877, and Thomas Driver, an English artist and auctioneer who worked on the island from 1814 to 1836. Their collective body of work presents a vivid artistic record of Bermuda's evolving landscape, architectural changes, and social life throughout the 19th century.
“We were thrilled to partner with the Bermuda National Trust to present this extraordinary exhibition for International Archives Day," said Minister Diallo Rabain. "The works of Edward James and Thomas Driver are more than just art; they are historical documents that offer a unique window into 19th-century Bermuda. This exhibition is a powerful example of how together, art and archives can preserve our national heritage."
Visitors were taken on a visual journey through time, witnessing Bermuda's transformation through the meticulous eyes of these early illustrators. The event highlighted the enduring value of archival collections and the vital role institutions like the Bermuda Archives and Bermuda National Trust play in preserving and sharing the island's history.
The Department of Libraries and Archives encourages the public to continue engaging with Bermuda's rich heritage by exploring its collections and attending future events.
