Ministry of Economy and Labour Highlights Role of Intellectual Property in Music for World IP Day 2025

The Ministry of Economy and Labour is pleased to announce the participation of the Government of Bermuda’s Intellectual Property Office (IPO), within the Department of Registry General, in the global celebration of World Intellectual Property Day on April 26, 2025.
This year’s World IP Day theme, “IP and Music: Feel the Beat of IP,” shines a spotlight on how intellectual property rights empower musicians, composers, producers, and other creators to safeguard their work and earn a livelihood from their creativity.
The Bermuda Government endorses the role the IPO undertakes in educating and supporting local artists, innovators, and entrepreneurs.
While the IPO is not required under the current copyright legislation to register copyright works, it remains committed to offering comprehensive advice on copyright matters, fostering a better understanding of the value and scope of copyrights, and intends to provide a voluntary registration system for the registration of copyright works.
The Minister of Economy and Labour, the Honourable Jason Hayward JP MP, explained the importance of the occasion: "World IP Day allows us to amplify the voices of Bermudian creatives and highlight the practical value of intellectual property in their artistic journeys.
“IP is essential not just for protection, but also for encouraging growth, innovation, and economic opportunity in our cultural industries."
Minister Jason Hayward advises that in recognition of this international day, the Registry General has invited local artists to participate in a public awareness campaign.
The campaign will involve sharing insights through short videos and written reflections on how IP has shaped their musical careers. These contributions will be showcased across the Department’s platforms, demonstrating the real-world impact of intellectual property in Bermuda.
