Zero Emission Vehicle (ZEV) - Myth-Busting Facts

Driving Range

  • Myth You can’t travel very far in a ZEV before it needs recharged.
  • Most ZEVs on the market can travel more than 300 km on a single charge. The average Bermudan drives less than 200 km per week, so you can be confident that a ZEV will take you where you want to go with minimal charging required.

Emissions

  • Myth Charging a ZEV from electricity on the grid produces the same amount of emissions as driving a petrol or diesel-powered vehicle.
  • While it’s true that the electricity that powers an EV comes in part from fossil fuels, EVs still produce 40% fewer emissions than petrol-powered vehicles due to being more efficient. As more renewable energy is added to the grid, emission reductions will only improve.

Vehicle Availability

  • Myth There’s very few zero-emission versions of the vehicle I need or want.
  • All vehicle classes in Bermuda have an electric alternative available. Additionally, most global automakers have committed to producing more EVs – some have even committed to selling ZEVs exclusively in the next decade, so you can expect more options to be available in the coming years.

Bermuda’s Not Ready

  • Myth Bermuda, as a small island, isn’t ready to transition to ZEVs.
  • As a small island-nation, Bermuda is uniquely positioned to transition to ZEVs. Short driving distances means ZEV ranges available now work great for Bermuda.

Charging is More Expensive.

  • Myth Charging an EV is more expensive than fueling a vehicle with petrol or diesel.
  • Evidence has shown that the average Bermudian can save on their monthly fuel bill by switching to an EV. It is estimated that the typical EV in Bermuda will cost about $0.10/km to charge.
