The Correct Way to Address a Letter  

REMEMBER: Display the number of your house in a location visible from the road (as required by law).

Make sure your friends, relatives and business correspondents know your complete address. The address should include:

Name of recipient

House name

House number and full street address (or P.O. Box Number)

Parish

Postal Code

 

The sender's name and full address should be in the top left hand corner of the envelope or on the back. This will ensure that the letter can be returned to sender, if required.

Aerogrammes
Aerogrammes are a convenient way to send your personal letters worldwide, that includes postage. You can post them as soon as you've finished writing. To all destinations 70¢ each.

Literature for the Blind (weight limit 7kg)
Locally and by surface letter and parcel worldwide - free. By air letter or parcel - .05 cents for each 50 grammes, irrespective of country of destination.

Registration
This service is only suitable for letters and packets containing items of little or no monetary value (unless privately insured). The cost, in addition to postage is $2.50 and offers a maximum compensation of $22.00. (Maximum letter weight 2 kgs. -- over 2 kgs., use parcel post rate).

Advice of Delivery
This service is only available for registered items. The charge is $2.00 and you should request this service at the time of posting.

Enquiry Fee
If you need to make a formal enquiry regarding your letters or parcels concerning damage, loss, or extreme delay you must complete a form PO 58, which is available at any Post Office. Enquiry fee is $2.50.

International Reply Coupons
These are postage-vouchers (C 22) you can purchase to send abroad to allow people to write to you free of charge. They are available from any Post Office priced at .65 cents each for Surface Mail and .95 cents each for Air Mail.

Permit to Seal Printed Paper Matter
Customers wishing to seal overseas printed paper items may apply to the Postmaster General for an annually renewable local sealing permit. In order to qualify for a permit, the following conditions must be met:

Each posting should consist of minimum number of 500 items, with a minimum of 2,500 items during the period of validity of the permit.

Fee: Annual non-refundable fee of $250.00 is payable for each local sealing permit.

Business Reply
A person who wishes to obtain a reply from a client without putting him to the expense of paying postage, may enclose in his communication an unstamped reply card, letter card, envelope, folded or gummed label bearing a specified design obtained from the Post Office. The Business Reply service can be used by any member of the general public, who obtains a licence, though it is chiefly designed to meet the needs of businesses. Before any person issues Business Reply Cards etc., he must obtain a licence from the Postmaster General.

Fees:

  • Licence $150.00
    Advance of Postage $100.00
    Administration charge for each letter card return .10 cents (this charge is made over and above postage)
  • Postage Paid -- Franked "Paid" by the Post Office
    Applications may be made for postal packets not bearing any indication that postage has been paid, to be accepted for franking "paid" by the Post Office.
  • The conditions under which such packets are accepted are that:
    (i) The number of postal packets, other than parcels, is not less than 150 items.
    (Ii) The letters must have the addresses in the same direction, are secured in bundles of 50 (or for bulky packets, in bundles of 10), the articles in each bundle being chargeable with the same rate of postage, which must be shown on the outside of the bundle.
  • Postage must be paid in cash at the time of posting.
    There will also be a small service fee payable.

Letters:
The limits of size are, in length 900 mm width and depth combined, the greatest dimension not to exceed 600 mm. In all cases in the form of a roll, the length and twice the diameter combined may not exceed 1040 mm and the greatest dimension 900 mm.

The minimum size for envelopes is 90mm x 140 mm but smaller size packets may still be sent if provided with an address label measuring at least 70mm x 100mm.

Postcards:
The minimum size is 90mm x 140mm.

Printed papers, including books, newspapers and periodicals:
Commercial advertising, publicity price lists newspapers books and periodicals may go at reduced rates both locally and overseas.

Locally printed newspapers periodicals printed in Bermuda and relating to Bermuda should be unsealed. The weight limit is 2 kg. Except for packets of books which will be taken up to 5 kg.

Small packets:
The limits of weight and size for small packets and letters are the same.

Registered postal packets must be handed to an officer on duty at the Post Office for processing.


 

Box Holder Postcodes  

Bermuda 's Postcode system is designed for faster mail sorting and delivery. Each Post Office has its own distinct two-letter, two-digit Postcode. The two letters get the mail to the correct Post Office, the two digits get it to the proper route.

When writing an address the two letter Postcode precedes the box number and appears to the right of the parish, accompanied by the two-digit designation. For residential delivery, the two letter, two-digit Postcode is simply placed to the right of the parish.

There are twelve post offices where private boxes are located. Each of the boxes in these offices is identified by a two-letter prefix followed by a number. The corresponding Postcode is comprised of the post office prefix followed by a space, then the letters BX, except for Hamilton boxes where a further breakdown is used. Postcodes for the various post offices are as shown below.
