The National Parks System The Department of Parks is responsible for the care and maintenance of more than 2,000 acres of land. The National Parks System makes up less than half of this area. Of the 213 sites listed in the Department's maintenance schedule, only 60 (or 28%) are actually parks. Over the years, the Department has been given more and more land to take care of without a related increase in resources to do the job. They are responsible for maintaining over 1,000 acres of government grounds, post offices, sports fields, grass verges and lay-bys, school playing fields, playgrounds and more.
