The Hon. Michael J. Scott, JP MP    


Mr. Michael John Scott is a Lawyer by training and is the proprietor of a Somerset legal practice Browne Scott.  Mr. Scott is an attorney with 26 years of practice to support him.  Prior to starting his own practice he was associated with Messrs. Scott & Scott a firm co- founded with his brother Lawrence G Scott and  following an early association with Browne & Wade Chambers the law firm of two previous PLP Leaders of the Opposition, Mr. L Frederick Wade and former Attorney General of Bermuda Dame Lois M. Browne Evans DBE JP LLB .

Mr. Scott has been a legal practitioner and fully engaged in PLP politics for a  period of 26 years.  His legal knowledge and skills and political experience combined make him one of the several able advisers to the Party and the Government.

His  governmental and party roles  have  included  his  appointment in 1998 as  PRO for the Progressive Labour Party  bringing to this  role his skills of  being both  pro active  with  the media and responding to then Party Leader’s decision to make this organ of the party more responsive to the party’s supporters and the Bermuda media and in crafting the Party image and message in a powerful and effective manner.  Following the 1998, Election Victory for the Progressive Labour Party Mr. Scott was appointed a Government Senator with responsibility in the Senate for Legislative Affairs, Development & Opportunity, Telecommunications, and E-Commerce, joining a powerful team of five Government Senators.  Following the July 24th.2003,  General Election Mr. Scott was re appointed to the Senate as Government Senate  Leader and Minister of Legislative Affairs. Following the March 4th.2004 Bye Election, which Mr. Scott contested and won he became the Member of Parliament for Constituency #36 Sandy’s North Mr. Scott was re appointed Minister of Legislative Affairs, and later appointed Minister of Telecommunications & E Commerce in July 2004 a position he held until 2006. following a  short  hiatus  from  the Cabinet  during which   Mr. Scott  was appointed  Junior Minister of Justice, and assist with the Government’s  Ministry of Justice  responsibilities and the legislative  programme in the House of Assembly , in June  2007  Mr.  Scott was appointed Minister of Health...

Mr. Scott has endeavored to carry on the great traditions of the Hon.  C Eugene Cox CBE JP MP this Government’s first Finance Minister as the representative for Sandy’s North who is responsive to his constituents, available, and able to meet their needs whenever called upon.

Mr. Scott earned his Bachelor of Arts Degree from Mount Allison University in English Literature and History.  Mr. Scott was called the English Bar in 1981, and is a Member of Middle Temple where he completed his pupilage at 12 Kings Bench Walk London with a concentration in criminal and civil litigation, before returning to Bermuda to practice in 1981.  Mr. Scott is a Member of the Allen Temple AME Church in Sandys Parish.   Mr. Scott is the President of the Allen Temple Senior Choir.  He is member of the Board of Trustees of the Church and serves on a number of Church committees.

His interests include reading, history and physical fitness.
